Water You Doing Harpoon Mechanics Guide
Shoot mines, pull the hull, and pick a pull speed before physics files a complaint.
The harpoon in Water You Doing? is not a decorative fishing spear. It is a physical object with constraints, pull force, extra modules as you progress, and a long history of launching boats when someone spams retract. Demo Hotfix 1 had to stop harpoons from being violently launched on rewind. Hotfix 5 added a gradual ramp-up so the first tug is not a rocket. Hotfix 6 added two explicit pull modes: Rapid and Slow. If your muscle memory is from a day-one demo clip, throw it out and read this page.
You will use the system three ways: shooting hazards, pulling the boat or debris, and problem-solving (gates, jumps, stuck hulls, wildlife). The number of harpoons grows as you play, which is both a gift and a way to attach three bad ideas to the same wreck.
Aim, fire, retract
Aim with the mouse or the right stick and fire. Hotfix 2 enlarged projectile collision so glancing hits register more often, added a tutorial plate, and fixed the Pull Harpoon tooltip for clients. If you are not the host and you see no pull prompt, that was a known replication bug — rejoin if an old session still hides it.
Retract is the dangerous half. The line is a constraint. Short, stable constraints were the Hotfix 1 goal. If you retract while the boat, a mine, and a rock are all on the same rope, the solver will pick a winner and it might be orbit.
Rapid Mode and Slow Mode
Hotfix 6 shipped two pulling modes:
- Rapid Mode — faster pull, worse manners. Use it on light debris, mines you already committed to, or a hull that is almost aligned with a dock.
- Slow Mode — ramped, predictable force. Use it whenever the line is anchored to the world and the boat already has speed, or when a teammate is standing on deck with a bucket.
Hotfix 5’s gradual ramp-up still applies underneath. You should feel the force build rather than an instant yank. If you do not, you may be stacked on extra modules. Extra harpoon modules had their own fixes in Hotfix 6; if a newly unlocked launcher ignores mode, it is a bug, not a hidden turbo.
Rule of thumb: Slow Mode is default for navigation pulls. Rapid Mode is for “that mine is in our face.” Never Rapid-pull a boat that is already airborne.
What you should shoot
- Sea mines — Detonate at range. A hull kiss is a wreck. Look ahead; mines bob.
- Falling rocks — Triggers were fixed in Hotfix 6. You can still intercept a boulder if you see the cliff first.
- Wildlife — Aggressive fauna can be spiked or dragged. Flocking was added in Hotfix 2; schools move as groups now.
- Debris and scrap — Pull loot to the deck instead of swimming for it. Watch collision: Hotfix 4 shrank scrap so piles pin the boat less often.
- Path rocks — Some routes want a pull or a break, not a ram. Use Slow Mode if the hull is the other end of the line.
What you should pull
Physical harpoons exist to move the boat without the engine, yank the wreck off a sandbar, line up a boat jump (Patch 06.09H added a speed boost before one), or drag a crate. This is the toy the reveal trailer sold. It is also how clients used to rubberband — the boat is the replicated physics object. If pulls feel like the hull is fighting you, see Troubleshooting and let the host drive.
Do not:
- Stack three pulls in the same direction and retract together.
- Pull while someone is in ragdoll on the gunwale (ragdoll-boat collision was a whole hotfix topic).
- Treat the harpoon as a winch and a cannon in the same second.
Upgrades and modules
Capacity goes up as you progress. Shop and module slots exist on the boat; Hotfix 7 fixed module slot rotation and unexpected destruction. More launchers mean more ways to attach the hull to a bad idea. Buy capacity after hull integrity. A fifth harpoon on a paper boat is how highlight reels start.
Throw-power charge was sped up in Hotfix 4. Combined with Rapid Mode it is easy to overshoot. Practice on starting-water debris before the first mine line.
Co-op harpoon duty
One person should own mines. One person should own pulls. If both fire at the same rock, you get a constraint knot. Clients had extra desync on harpoons through several patches; if only the host sees a stuck line, wait before adding yours.
Audio: harpoon-pull volume was raised in Hotfix 3 so you can hear a bad idea starting. If the pull scream rises and the horizon tilts, cut it.
Harpoon versus the rest of the loop
Bail first if the bilge is winning. Steer around a mine if you spotted it early — a shot is not mandatory. Do not skip fishing to practise shots while coins are empty. Quests may send you through a jump or a gate; finish the quest marker after the hull is stable.
The harpoon is how Water You Doing? turns physics into a joke. Slow Mode is how you keep the joke from ending the run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is Rapid Mode versus Slow Mode?
Demo Hotfix 6 added both as harpoon-pulling modes. Rapid is snappy and dangerous on a moving hull. Slow is the default for towing the boat or dragging world anchors.
Can a harpoon launch the boat into the sky?
Yes if you stack pulls or retract a bad constraint. Hotfix 1 targeted violent retract launches; Slow Mode and the pull ramp exist so you stop treating every tug like a rocket.
Do clients aim the same as the host?
They should. Several demo hotfixes fixed client harpoons, tooltips, and slots. If lines ghost, rejoin rather than adding more ropes.
Is there a harpoon tutorial in-game?
Hotfix 2 added a tutorial plate and clearer pull guidance. If you skipped it, this page is the long version.
